YAM FESTIVAL At University of Ibadan

A one day music festival tagged YAM FESTIVAL- YORUBA ART MUSIC FESTIVAL holds at main hall of the Conference Center, the University of Ibadan on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. The festival is borne out of the research findings that traditional music remains the bedrock of Yoruba contemporary music and that what people consider classical music today has its origin from the traditions.

This maiden edition of YAM FESTIVAL brings together renowned scholars as speakers at the syndicate session while the Distinguished Festival Guest is Omoba Yemisi Shyllon. Some of the speakers at the event are Prof. Mosunmola Omibiyi-Obidike, Prof. Omolara Ogundipe, Prof. Tunji Vidal, Prof. Femi Adedeji, Prof. Onyee Nwankpa and Dr. Sola Olorunyomi.

The syndicate session which holds at 11:00am is a prelude to the festival on stage at 4:00pm. The main festival features Tolu Owoaje’s University of Ibadan (UI) Choir, Dayo Oyedun’s University College Hospital (UCH) Sinfonia, Wole Adetiran’s People’s Voices, Kehinde Faniyi’s Poly Chorus and Pinmiloye’s K Sticks and The African Master Drummers.

The organizer of this music festival is Dr. Adeoluwa Okunade, an ethnomusicologist and a Senior Lecturer at the department of music, University of Port Harcourt.
